Deodorant Cream

Deodorant Cream
Homemade Deodorant

I've been exploring several other blogs and wanted to try a new project.  Making my own deodorant.  I going with the cream formula (see link).  Except for the shea butter I had all the other ingredients in my pantry.  I am not sure why I wanted to do this, except to play chemist in my kitchen. If this works better then store bought and is cheaper.  What is there to lose?

Formula:
3 Tablespoons baking soda
2 Tablespoons corn starch
2 Tablespoons cocoa butter
2 Vitamin E gel caps
3 Tablespoons of Shea Butter (I didn't have this)
Optional: essential oils 20 -30 drops.

Mix all ingredients except vitamin either on top stove or microwave.  I chose the microwave for 30 sec.
Blend and add vitamins. Add essential oils.  I added rose oil since I had it on hand. Place in refrigerator to set.

When I took the deodorant out of the refrigerator, it was pretty hard.  So I left it out to warm up to room temperature before using.  After warming up a bit, it was a little crumbly.  I assume since I didn't have any shea butter in this batch that I needed something else to bind it together.  I saw on another blog where someone added mineral oil, so I added 1/4 teaspoon to smooth up the texture.  The picture above is final version.  So far its easy to apply and its not greasy. I've been using it for three days and it seems to be working.

  1. Since posting this blog, I have adjusted the formula a bit to be solid to be pour into an old deodorant container. I haven't bought store bought deodorant since July 2011.
