Do you ever have one of those ideas that you can't get out of your head kind of like a bad song. Well this happens to me in that I kept thinking about having a bike trailer. I think the reason I couldn't get this thought out of my head is because I tried to go get a few groceries using our child bike trailer and I kept thinking something more sturdy would be better. First off, I didn't want to spend $400 for a trailer, so I began my search by trying to fine a used child trailer that I could upgrade. I searched craigslist and yard sales but I couldn't find anything.
While I was searching for a used trailer, I kept thinking how fun it would be if I could build one. I was a little intimidated by this project because I do not consider myself the most handiest person and I do not have that many tools. I researched lot of different plans and decided that I wanted something similar to aluminum frame trailer like the Nomad, but I knew I had to choose a plan that didn't require welding since I am not a welder nor do I know anyone with that skill.

Welding Cart aka bike trailer |
As it turns out my husband found a welding cart at our Harbor Freight on sale and we decided to build my cart from this. All I had to do was add the floor which I sprayed painted black, an arm and a hitch and I was ready to go. I probably need a flag, but haven't add that feature yet. I have painted the arm red to match paint on the cart. Since I live in the desert, sliming the tires is a must.

Homemade Hitch |
I know I didn't go into detail in the building process, but I can answer any questions if anyone has any. I found inspiration and directions from these websites http://www.howtofixbikes.ca and http://www.instructables.com/id/Bicycle-cargo-trailer--200-lb-capacity,-$30-for-pa/.
I had the same itch for the longest time. I even convinced my neighbors to give me their old beat up trampoline thinking I'd make a cart out of the frame and then today I was in HF and saw this cart and said to myself "this is perfect". I thought nobody would've thought of this especially since my previous searches for bike carts never turned up your pictures/page but looks like I wasn't searching "welder bike cart" before...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pictures, that'll give me something to go off of for the hitch.
